Oceans and seas cover about seventy percent of the Earth's surface and they are found almost everywhere. They contain roughly ninety-seven percent of the Earth's water supply and it is where I live and play.

The oceans of Earth are so special in that no other planet in our Solar System has liquid water. Life on Earth started in the seas and the oceans continue to be home to many different living creatures and animals, other than me and my family.

The oceans of Earth are very important and have many functions, especially affecting the weather and temperature. They control the temperature of the Earth by absorbing radiation from the sun and storing it as heat energy. The ocean currents distribute this heat energy around the world. This heats the land and air, keeping you warm in the winter and then cools it, keeping you cool in the summer.

Also, water evaporating from it forms the clouds that we see in the sky, and then the rain, which makes us all wet. Isn't that interesting.

The Earth's oceans are all connected to one another so it is really one big ocean. However, the ocean is divided into five different areas, which are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and the Southern.

There are also many seas which are smaller than oceans and are a branch of one of the five oceans. A sea is often partly enclosed by land. The largest seas are the South China Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.
