With a mouthful of teeth, we don't really need much protection. In fact, one of us goes through thousands of teeth in a lifetime, with each row of teeth larger than the one before it.
However, we do have other ways to protect ourselves. The most interesting is our body colour. If you look at most of us, you will see that we are white at the bottom and dark on the top. There is a reason for this and that is camouflage. Indeed, if you look at us from the top, our dark top will mix in with the dark bottom of the sea, making us invisible and if you look at us from underneath, our white bottom will mix in with the sunlight from above, making us invisible as well. Tell me that’s not cool!
We also have other types of protection such as a lid over our eyes, which protects us when we attack prey. We can also roll our eyes into their sockets, showing only the whites, while attacking prey, to protect the more important seeing part of the eye.
I guess these are some of the reasons why we have survived for such a long time.
