Every year, many many sharks are killed by fisherman, catching them and collecting their fins to make shark fin soup, a dish that is sold for a lot of money. To make this soup, the sharks are caught, their fins cut off and the body of the shark is usually thrown back into the water. Without it's fins, the shark cannot swim and it simply sinks to the bottom of the ocean and drowns.

This cruel practice happens because most shark fins are valuable. It is believed that a single shark fin can fetch around fifteen thousand dollars. Now that is a lot of money if you ask me. On the other hand, the rest of the shark's meat has little value because it rots if it is stored for a long time.

Nowadays, it is thought that you humans kill about 100 million sharks every year and that if you continue to do so, without doing anything else about it, most types of shark shall no longer exist, including me.

Finning and throwing of shark bodies is wasteful of protein and other good products that humans can make from us. That is because they only take a very small part of us and throw the remainder away. Doing this, threatens many shark numbers and the balance of life in my home, the ocean.
